A backgammon is the largest win in the game: you bear off all your checkers while your opponent has borne off none and still has a checker on the bar or in your home board. It counts triple, compared to double for a gammon and single for an ordinary win. Achieving a backgammon usually means you trapped one or more enemy checkers deep in your territory while racing the rest of yours home. Because it multiplies the result, it is worth playing on for the backgammon when you have the opponent stuck, but only if you can do so without exposing your own checkers to a hit.
