Checkers always move in one direction, from higher-numbered points toward your home board, by the amount shown on each die. You can move to any point that is open, meaning it is empty, holds your own checkers, or holds just one enemy checker. You cannot land on a point held by two or more enemy checkers, because that point is blocked. The two dice are two separate steps, so you may move two different checkers or move one checker twice by combining both numbers. Deciding which points to occupy is the heart of backgammon strategy, since blocked points slow your opponent down.
