A fork is a tactic where one piece attacks two or more enemy pieces at the same time. Because the opponent can usually save only one, you win the other. Knights are famous forkers thanks to their unusual jump, but any piece can fork — a pawn can attack two pieces, and a queen can hit several at once. The most powerful fork is a royal fork, which attacks the king and queen together, since the king must move and the queen is then lost. Look for undefended enemy pieces and squares from which a single move hits two of them.
