Development means bringing your knights, bishops, rooks, and queen off their starting squares to active positions where they can influence the game. At the start, most of your army sits idle on the back rank; each piece you develop adds attacking and defending power. Good development means moving knights and bishops toward the centre early, castling to connect the rooks, and avoiding wasted moves shuffling the same piece repeatedly. A player who develops faster often gets an attack going before the opponent is ready. Falling behind in development is one of the most common causes of an early loss.
