When a man reaches the opponent's last row, it is promoted into a king, called a dama, gaining much greater power. A king can move any number of empty squares in a straight line and capture enemy pieces from a distance, in any of the four straight directions, including backward. This transformation is often the turning point of the game, since a single flying king can dominate several ordinary men. Note that if a man only passes over the last row during a capture without stopping there, it does not promote — it must actually end its move on that far row.
