A man becomes a king, called a dama, when it reaches the opponent's far row — the last rank on the far side of the board. The moment it lands there, it is promoted and gains far greater power, able to move and capture across many squares in a straight line. There is one important detail: if a man is in the middle of a capturing chain and only passes over the last row without stopping there, it usually does not promote — it must actually finish its move on that row. Once crowned, a dama is your strongest piece and often decides the game.
