Men move one square forward or sideways — up, left, or right — but never backward and never diagonally. This gives an ordinary man three possible directions of movement, which is more than the diagonal-only pieces of standard checkers. When capturing, men jump in these same forward and sideways directions, but they can never jump backward toward their own side. The ability to move sideways lets you reposition men without advancing them, which is useful for setting up captures or defending. Once a man reaches the far row and becomes a king, it gains the power to move and capture in all four straight directions.
