Men in Turkish Draughts move one square straight forward or sideways — up, left, or right — but never diagonally and never backward. This orthogonal movement is the biggest difference from international checkers, where pieces slide diagonally. A man can step sideways to reposition or forward to advance, yet it can never move backward, and it captures only in the forward and sideways directions. Because they travel in straight lines, men can occupy any square on the board. Ordinary men keep these limits until one reaches the opponent's far row and is promoted to a king, which moves far more freely.
