Each player starts with sixteen men in Turkish Draughts, arranged on the second and third rows of their side of the 8x8 board. That leaves the back row and the two central rows empty at the beginning, with thirty-two men in total on the board. Because men use every square rather than only dark ones, the starting position is compact and the armies face each other closely across the centre. As the game goes on, captures reduce these numbers quickly, and some men are promoted to kings. You win by capturing or trapping all sixteen of your opponent's pieces.
