The queen moves any number of empty squares in a straight line — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. It combines the powers of a rook and a bishop, making it the strongest piece on the board. The queen captures the same way it moves, landing on the first enemy piece in its path, but it cannot jump over pieces. Because it is so valuable, avoid bringing the queen out too early, where opponents can chase it and gain time by developing while you retreat. Save its power for coordinated attacks once your other pieces are active.
