The knight moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and then one square at a right angle. It is the only piece that can jump over other pieces, friendly or enemy, landing on the final square. A knight always moves to a square of the opposite colour to the one it started on. Knights are strongest in closed positions and near the centre, where they attack up to eight squares. From a corner they reach only two, so the old saying goes: a knight on the rim is dim. Develop knights early toward the middle.
