There are 106 tiles in the pool, and once you know exactly how many copies of each one exist, you can roughly estimate the chance of drawing what you need and decide whether a risk is worth taking. The Pool Math: How Many of Each Tile Exist
Good probability instincts start with memorizing the inventory. The Okey set has 106 tiles:
- 4 colours (red, yellow, black, blue) x numbers 1 through 13 x 2 copies = 104 numbered tiles.
- 2 false jokers (the star/joker tiles) = 106 total.
The single most important fact is this: there are only 2 copies of any specific tile in the entire pool. There are exactly two red 7s, exactly two black 11s. If both copies of the one tile you need have already left the table, your hope of completing that run drops to zero. That is the whole foundation of tile-counting: marking off the copies that pass in front of you.
Don't forget the joker side. The okey is set by the indicator (gösterge): the okey is the tile one rank above the indicator in the same colour (if the indicator shows 13, the okey becomes 1, wrapping around). There are 2 copies of that okey tile in the pool, and because the 2 false jokers always act as the okey, you have a total of four "flexible" wild tiles floating around a game.
Sensing the Odds of Drawing a Tile
At the start, after you've taken your 21 tiles (or 22 if you're the opening player) and the indicator is set, roughly 80-some unseen tiles remain. If you've seen neither copy of a tile you want, it's either buried in the face-down pool or sitting in an opponent's rack. Exact percentages shift with the information on the table, but the practical rule is simple:
- Neither copy is visible: the tile can still come; waiting may be worth it.
- One copy has been discarded or used: your odds are halved; start looking for an alternative.
- Both copies are gone: stop waiting for that tile; don't build your hand around it.
A run or set that depends on one exact tile is the most fragile structure there is. That's why experienced players favour two-way (open-ended) waits. If you hold a black 5-6-7 run that can extend with either a black 4 or a black 8, any of those tiles helps you. That is mathematically far stronger than waiting for a single closed gap (say, the black 6 between a black 5 and 7). An open-ended wait can be filled by up to 4 tiles, while a single inside gap leaves you hostage to just 2.
Practical Tile-Counting Techniques
You don't have to memorize the whole pool; you just have to track the right tiles. Focus on these at the table:
- Watch the discards: especially numbers in your needed range. If all three opponents keep tossing 9s and 10s, most of those tiles are dead, and a finishing plan built on that range is weak.
- Read the draws: if an opponent picks a tile off the discard, assume they're collecting its neighbours (for a run) or the same number in other colours (for a set). If they took a yellow 8, they may want yellow 7-9 or the red/black/blue 8 — so avoid feeding those tiles.
- Discard without leaking information: throwing a tile next to the one you just drew tells opponents what you're building. When you can, discard from "dead" zones — numbers whose copies you've already seen.
- Count the jokers: know how many of the four wild tiles (the okey plus the two false jokers) have surfaced. If they're all out, nobody is hiding a double-okey surprise and you can close your hand more confidently.
Turning Odds Into Decisions: Hold or Throw?
The real payoff of counting is converting that gut feel into clean hold-or-throw decisions. Before you discard a tile that seems useless, ask yourself three things:
- How many different runs or sets could this tile serve? A tile that feeds only one possibility goes sooner than a versatile one. Middle numbers (6-7-8) build runs in both directions and are usually more valuable; edge numbers like 1 and 13 extend only one way.
- Have I already seen the completing tiles? If both tiles that would complete your wait have been discarded, trying to save that hand is just waiting on nothing — change the plan.
- Would this discard let an opponent finish? If you've noticed a player grabbing discards from the same zone repeatedly, you can lock them up by holding the colour or neighbouring numbers they need. Probability works for defence too.
The expected-value mindset is this: rather than waiting for one miracle tile, build a hand that stays open to several finishing paths at once. Two-way runs, flexible joker use, and a plan resting on tiles that are still "live" (no copies gone yet) will lift your win rate over the long run.
How Probability Differs in 101 vs. Düz Okey
The principles are identical in both variants, but the emphasis shifts. In Düz Okey, the goal is to split your whole hand into runs and sets and go out as fast as possible, so speed and flexible waits dominate — two-way open ends are gold. In 101 Okey, penalty points enter the picture, so probability also works toward limiting risk: if both copies of a high-value tile you're holding are already gone, you'd rather throw it early than eat a big penalty at the end of the hand. In 101, tile-counting isn't only about finishing — it's a tool for loss minimization.
